The Brittany Higgins and Bruce Lehrmann saga, here in Australia, has hit the headlines again. The defamation trial brought forward by Mr Lehrmann against Network Ten and interviewer, Lisa Wilkinson, leaves Justice Michael Lee in two minds, was the allegation of rape truthful or a lie? Was there a political coverup or was it a weapon to bring down the current government?
To a liar, the most dangerous individual is the person who catches lies but doesn’t say anything about it. Then the liar isn’t sure which lies are compromised.
Jesse Ball (American poet)
I refer to the quote above which just about sums up his job as he learns of omissions of evidence of who said, what, silencing of others information and how the media portrayed the story to distort the truth in the name of commercialism, not to mention Lisa Wilkinson wanting to be the head cheer leader for the #MeToo movement. I wonder how’s that working out for her? #Believeallwomen
The Brittany Higgins and Bruce Lehrmann case in Australia has set a precedent going forward. We can’t believe someone on face value if there are inconsistencies in their story and no physical evidence, can we? Well, we did. We even awarded the journalist, Lisa Wilkinson, a Logie on her interview with the complainant who then proceeded to make her acceptance speech, prejudicing the trial. It’s scary to think Lehrmann may have been convicted of sexual assault if the trial wasn’t delayed three months because of this action. Both the media and the politician’s behaviour throughout disrespected the basic human right to innocent until proven guilty. That one just flew out the window on this case, along with the rule book. The charges were dropped against Lehrmann and he always maintained his claim of innocence but he’ll never get the chance to prove it now. He’ll always be known as the man who raped Brittany Higgins inside Parliament House.
Another quote, “Liar, Liar, pants on fire.” Will the true villain be revered? Will truth prevail? Unfortunately, the only two people who know that is Brittany Higgins and Bruce Lehrmann. I guess we better not hold our breath then and let Justice Micael Lee decide?
