Staying Strong: Rediscovering the Value of the ‘Sticks and Stones’ Rhyme

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words shall never hurt me.

A Children’s Rhyme – Mid 19th Century.

It was a rhyme that kids used to protect themselves from name-calling and bullying. The goal was to make them stronger, avoid fighting, and stay calm. When I was a child, reciting the rhyme helped me ignore hurtful words that were being directed at me. But some people now think it’s not okay because words can be harmful.

However, learning to ignore name-calling and bullying can be a good thing. Starting at a young age helps you believe that words can’t hurt you, unless you let them. This has to be make you feel stronger and in control on how you react, doesn’t it?

Name-calling and bullying happen not only in schools, but also among adults, especially on social media. This can have a disastrous impact and long term effects. Why has it come to this? Have we become too sensitive to the words of others?

I believe the “sticks and stones” rhyme was a way to stand up to bullying and protect oneself. It may seem childish now, but it’s a reminder not to let other people’s words hurt us. Words can be twisted and misunderstood but we have to get over, over reacting to everything said and find a balance!

Does “sticks and stones” still have a place in today’s society? Ancient wisdom could still be relevant? It seems like our ancestors might have been onto something with their simple solutions to complex problems. A kids rhyme says ‘no’ to bullying!
